It's a battle
Josiah Hutchinson is considered by family, friends and enemies to be a "brainless boy". But then he shows them all that he not only has brains, but knows how to use them! Especially since he, his friends, and his sister Hope have decided to help their parents fight the Putnams, who are ruining the village and the church with their evil actions. But this isn't a war of weapons, but of words and of actions. Who will win?

I loved these books, they have really encouraged me and taught me, while still being fun!

A touching series.
Josiah Hutchingson lives in a Puritan family. In this series, Josiah and his sister, Hope get into all sorts of adventures while learning more about God. A really touching series.....

General William Averell's Salem Raid: Breaking the Knoxville Supply Line
Published in Hardcover by Burd Street Press (May, 1999)
Author: Darrell L. Collins
Average review score:

I felt like I was there
I wanted to read this book because of the family connection I have with it. My gg-grandfather was a member of the West Virginia 8th Mounted Infantry. As I read the book I realized I couldn't put it down. As Averell rushed to escape to the North, his decision to burn the Island Ford Bridge, my heart began to sink. For I now know what my gg-grandfather must have felt like to know that he was part of the rear guard that was left behind on the wrong side of the river. If you want interesting reading of a little known event in the history of the Civil War, then this book is for you.

A well told tale of a little known Civil War episode.
I ordered this book hoping to learn more about my great-grandfather's regiment, which served under Averell in the Army of West Virginia. The excellent Order of Battle appendix told me right away that the 8th Ohio Volunteer Cavalry hadn't joined Averell's command by the time of this December 1863 raid, but that was my only disappointment. This is an easy reading, well documented story of a little known episode that shocked the Confederacy. More important, it is a gripping tale of men succeeding against the elements, and against overwhelming odds. Averell and his small brigade "marched, climbed, slid and swum" 355 miles through enemy held territory in the dead of winter, going without food and sleep, climbing mountains and crossing rivers, avoiding Confederates sent to intercept them, and striking the depot at Salem (today a suburb of Roanoke, Virginia) to threaten the lines of communication between Richmond and Knoxville. The book documents the extraordinary leadership and tenacity of Brigadier General William Averell, but it also highlights the streak of hesitancy that eventually caused Phil Sheridan to sack him during the Shenandoah Valley campaign of 1864 (in which my great-grandfather's regiment did take part). Abundant photographs and simple, readable maps complement the text and help bring the characters and the story to life. A truly good book, highly recommended for descendents of the Gray as well as the Blue, and for anyone else interested in the Civil War.

My favorite Her Story book.
This book is about Priscilla Foster, a 12 year old girl living in Salem in 1692. Priscilla's friends have started accusing innocent people of being witches and before she knows it Priscilla has joined them in accusing people. Priscilla wants to stop but she finds herself unable to. This is my favorite Her Story book.

Best Her Story Book
Priscilla Foster is one of the girls who see witches in the Salem Witch Trials. She tells her grand-daughter about her tragic and terrifying tale. Gives a must-read account of the trials.

Wonderful Book Series!
The Salem Years Series is wonderful! My 9 year old son is an avid reader and he loves these books. He read the first three in just four days -- he couldn't put them down. I liked them too! Lots of adventure! This series really shows how God can help you and he loves you -- no matter what. God is always with us and we can go to him anywhere, at any time. Wonderful lessons for my son (and me too)! We plan to purchase the whole Salem Years series and then go on to the Williamsburg years. Highly recommendend!

This book is great for ALL ages!
This is one of the best books I've read in a LONG time. Josiah and Hope are such typical children, it's easy to picture oneself in their place. Josiah learns just how important family is, and how silly it is to be prejudiced. It is a great book for reading to the kids, as the characters have good values and character. =I= enjoyed the book tremendously and I'm looking forward to the next one!

The airline bibliography : the Salem College guide to sources on commercial aviation

A new edition
I am the author of this guide. After many inquiries, it has been decided to update this work with a new title, not yet chosen (I am no longer affiliated with Salem College, which became Salem-Teikyo University a decade ago). The new book will be published by Scarecrow Press in early 2001. The compilation is being built to emphasize materials published since 1985, but it will also include references to items missed in the earlier outing and perhaps (it hasn't yet been decided) will include up to 10 of the most important titles from each of the many sections of the earlier edition. It pleases me that copies of the earlier work were purchased throughout the airline industry, by enthusiasts, and are found in most major university, government, and large public libraries. I am working diligently away to make certain that the next installment is as well received. If you want to offer suggestions for material inclusion or other comments, please direct them to me in care of Scarecrow Press.

An Angel's Touch: The Presence and Purpose of Supernatural Messengers in Your Life
Published in Hardcover by Harrison House, Incorporated (July, 1997)
Authors: Cheryl Salem, Henry Salem, and Harry Salem
Average review score:

God's angels are watching over us
There is much talk today about guardian angels. Cheryl Salem, Miss America l980, relates her own experiences with angels as well sharing what the Bible says about them and their operation in our lives. I have heard her speak recently about her 6 year old daughter, Gabrielle, who died in Nov. l999 of a brain tumor. She spoke of how she literally saw the angels come into her room 3 times to escort Gabrielle to Heaven. Cheryl asked them to give her just a little bit longer with her daughter. The angels would ease back into the hall. Finally, as Gabrielle was leaving Earth and going to Heaven with the angels, the little girl was blowing kisses to them. I hope that Cheryl will update this book and add this extremely touching story. Very encouraging and informative reading! You won't be disappointed.

Annie Salem: An American Tale (New American Fiction, 34)
Published in Paperback by Sun & Moon Press (October, 1996)
Author: Mac Wellman
Average review score:

Wellman's Martians come to earth
Possibility one of the finest works to come from playwright Wellman. Some of the obsessions of his plays enter this book. A love story on one hand, a tour-de-force of a coming-of-age book, a mediatation on what it is to be "alien."
